Self-guided Thursday Night Workout

There’s no coordinated Thursday Night Workout this week, but we invite you to try one on your own—Fartleks.

Session Details

A fartlek (Swedish for “speed play”) is an unstructured interval workout where you mix easy running with spontaneous surges—often to a nearby landmark—then easing off, then picking it up again on to the next tree, stop sign, etc. It’s a fun, low-pressure way to build speed, strength, and awareness by letting effort rather than pace guide your efforts.

Details:

  1. Start with a dynamic workout (leg swings, hamstring sweeps, air squats, calf raises, etc.). Then easy jog for 10-15 minutes.

  2. Pick a landmark on the landscape and pick up the pace until you reach it. Listen to your body—what is the sustainable pace you can hold to reach your landmark.

  3. Once you reach your landmark, recover with an easy walk or jog until the next landmark. Repeat for 15-30 minutes depending on your experience level.

  4. Cool down with an easy 10-15 minute jog and some light stretching.
